In 1956, Rao Dhir Singh, created the Shahpura House, once residence of erstwhile rulers and scion of the Shekhawat clan of Rajputs. The house has been converted into a hotel by Rao Dhir Singh and the doors have been flung open to the visitors from all over the world. Rare among hotels it has remained a family home, where the members of the erstwhile ruling family welcome travellers personally as their honoured guest.
Shapure House is a fine example of traditional Rajput architecture, a mixture of Mughal and Indian, and boasts a facade with Shekhawati frescoes and domes. The family portraits add to the charm of the hotel, where tradition still runs strong. Like many historic houses, Shahpura House is a curious mixture of the old and the new.
The family hotel is conveniently located in a plush residential area of Jaipur, well insulated from the bustle and chaos of the city in Rajasthan, a Northwestern province of India. Jaipur, also called the Pink City, is surrounded by the ancient Aravali Mountains and is set on the edge of three lakes. The city is a brilliant kaleidoscope of narrow lanes flanked by bright stalls, gardens, lakes, palaces and temples.
