The luxury Lodge at Pico Bonito is uniquely set between the country’s largest national park and a cacao plantation. Although only 20 minutes from the bustling Caribbean town of La Ceiba, the lodge feels like it’s a million miles from anywhere.
Pico Bonito is the name of the national park and the 8,000ft mountains that provides the lodge with an ever–changing backdrop. Walkways lead from the main reception area into a cocoa plantation where the cabins are located as well as through extremely well–tended gardens which also form the attractive surroundings for the swimming pool.
There are 22 well–appointed cabin rooms at The Lodge at Pico Bonito, charmingly designed to combine rustic chic and colonial elegance. Cooling paddle fanshang high on the sloping hardwood ceiling of each cabin whilst the tiled bathrooms feature a hot water shower and flush toilet. Each cabin is surrounded by a private deck with a hammock, table and chairs.
The lodge borders 1,100 km2 of national park which is accessed by railcar through a coconut plantation to a lagoon. Here one takes a motor boat for safaris on the water or, alternatively, a kayak to explore the mangrove swamps in search of white–faced monkeys, parrots, herons and the elusive jaguar. Horse riding and mountain biking are other available options whilst the lodge’s own butterfly farm is definitely another point of interest.
