Ikal del Mar is carefully tucked away five kilometres north of Playa del Carmen on a truly spectacular stretch of white sand beach, far away from the crowds.

Accommodation is in 30 stone–built luxury villas with thatched palapa roof and enclosed in jungle garden foliage. Each villa features an outdoor terrace with double chaise longue daybed, stone breakfast table, handmade crochet hammock, an open–air shower and a private calabash–shaped plunge pool. Indoors, the villas have a separate spacious bathroom with standing shower, king–sized beds or two doubles, CD player, TV, safe and telephone. The style is a combination of Mexican contemporary, minimalist and palapa.

There is a Spa and beauty treatment centre, with separate men’s and ladies’ sections, massage rooms and steam room. It must be said that there’s a slight Romanesque feel to it – the female staff walk around in white togas. By the beach, at the end of a sinuous white path, is the pool and restaurant which serves excellent international and local cuisine.
