Imaret
Built between 1817 and 1821 by Mehmet Ali, viceroy of Egypt under Ottoman Rule and Egypt’s modernising ruler of the late 19th century, the glorious building was a gift to Kavala, his birthplace. Completely renovated in 2004 with careful attention to preserving the building’s character and cultural heritage, the Imaret has been transformed into a luxury hotel.
Located in the city’s old quarter Panagia, the Imaret overlooks the harbour and the sparkling sea of Kavala. The 27 deluxe rooms and suites boast their own particular decorative style, based on the distinctive architectural details of the building.
Guests will discover the old, high–domed teaching room, now used as a reading room, a Hammam, long archways leading past the former cells that are converted into bedrooms and a cistern where guests can swim by candlelight under the domed ceilings. Guests will be mesmerised by the dome–shaped ceilings, earthy colours, subdued lighting, handmade upholstery in the finest fabrics, elegant furniture and the delicately oriental decoration.
