Discover the breathtaking wilderness while staying at the Berkeley River Lodge
In the northwest of Australia, the Berkeley River cuts through a plateau and pours itself cleanly into the Timor Sea. This is the site of the Berkeley River Lodge, a truly stunning hotel complex that offers travelers an unequal escape from civilization in opulent comfort. The Kimberley Plateau runs up right into the coastline, and the river leaves dramatic cliffs along every bend in its journey. The ocean welcomes the outflow of the river beautifully as well, without a trace of lowlands or marsh, and this is where the Berkeley has placed its luxury suites. Accessible only by air, the Berkeley River Lodge is a true island of sumptuousness in the midst of outback canyons and wilderness.
Choosing the Grandest View
The Kimberley Coast of Australia lies in a moderate climate, and throughout the year the guests of the Berkeley River Lodge can expect glorious weather, opening up fantastic views of the wild lands all around. The complex is spread around the top of a hill near the airstrip, within a few hundred yards of the confluence of ocean and river. Several villas stretch along the hill, offering either ocean views or grand panoramas of the canyons and the river carving through them. Each of the twenty villas is designed with a contemporary flair, with local river stones adding a rustic touch. They all feature open-air ensuites, complete with sundecks and outdoor showers.
The Best Part of the Day
The Kimberley Coast offers fishermen some of the finest prospects in the world. The lightly populated area has left the spawning grounds of the Mangrove Jacks and Golden Snappers virtually untouched, with fish populations overflowing. Several powerful boats are always ready to head out to sea or up the river, but the grandest option of all is the Heli-Fishing experience. The Lodge provides a well-appointed Bell 407 helicopter to fly you to the best fishing spots in the area, returning you back to the hotel at night, where your record catch can be preserved or cooked up that same day.
Organizing an Amazing Day
With its helicopter available everyday, the Berkeley offers local flights to the natural wonders of the area, such as Mitchell Falls, tucked away in the river’s canyons. One half hour flight to the east sits the table-topped Mount Casuarina. A landing on the top of the mountain will enable you to enjoy a unique luxury experience – fine dining at sunset in the middle of the sky.
Good Food and Great Fun
The Berkeley River Lodge features a 20-foot swimming pool and an extensive library. It also operates the Dunes Restaurant in its main building. At the Dunes, local fish are featured, with imported gourmet delicacies scattered throughout the menu. The finest Australian wines are always available, and fresh bread is prepared three times per day. A good meal will be the perfect finish to a day of guided tours, hiking into the outback to study saltwater crocs in the river, or studying Aboriginal rock art dated to 60,000 years ago.
