Lizard Island, rejoice amongst reptilians
Lizard Island is the most northerly resort in Queensland and is located precisely on the Great Barrier Reef. There are 24 beaches and a lagoon on the island and you can only get there by private charter from Cairns Airport. Everything about this unforgettable holiday is five-star plus, from the accommodation to the service, to the fine dining and most of all, to the beauty of the surroundings. Lizard Island is a National Park, built of granite and about 10 kilometres in size. Together with three smaller islands – Palfrey, South and Bird – and a fringing reef, they encircle the 10 metre deep Blue Lagoon.
The island was a sacred place to the Aboriginal people. They believed that the Lizard group of islands was created in the Dreamtime and saw it as a stingray. Lizard Island was the head and the smaller islands the tail. The name Lizard Island was given to it by Captain Cook when he was in the area in 1770 and the only land animals he saw were lizards.
As well as the Resort, there is a Research Station on the island which is operated by the Australian Museum for students interested in the coral reefs. The National Park covers 1,013 hectares and the island is truly secluded from the rest of the world. The weather is tropical with an average temperature of 27 degrees so you can holiday year round. The resort has a Nature Calendar so that you can plan your holiday around the species you’d most like to see.
Guests enjoy a casual lifestyle during the day but like to dress more formally for the evening. The Resort has 40 luxurious suites in a variety of configurations. Accommodation ranges from The Villa which commands uninterrupted views across Sunset Beach and the Coral Sea to Beach View Rooms that have private balconies.
The Villa is designed by Hector Guthrie to create a sense of indulgence but with understated elegance. Two bedrooms and a large lounge area plus butler’s kitchen give you lots of room and allow snacks to be served in your room. You have a private plunge pool, premium sound system, smart TV and Apple docking stations.
Snorkeling, scuba diving, walking, fishing are just a few of the activities on offer with a relaxing spa and massage to look forward to at the end of your day.
Your own personal chef and wait staff provide private dining with 48 hours notice.
The Salt Water Restaurant is a relaxing place which specialises in local, fresh dishes covering a variety of cuisines. Sunset Beachside Dining is the pinnacle of dining experiences as you dine in your own private marquee.
