Marataba Trails Lodge is aimed at the more adventurous explorers
Marataba Trails Lodge is aimed at the more adventurous explorers, offering unequalled high impact walking trails in the spectacularly beautiful Marataba Reserve, a 23,000 ha private concession adjoined to the vast, malaria-free Marakele National Park in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Perched on the side of a mountain, with views all the way into Waterfall Valley, Marataba Trails Lodge is utterly remote in a wilderness world of its own. This is where rich red mountain rock bears down on the verdant plains at its feet, where contrasting mountain landscapes, grass-clad hills and deep valley make for the most stunning amazing environment.
Guests can expect to see all of the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats, as well as an amazing variety of birds – including the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world, with more than 800 breeding pairs – during the different trail walks that are being offered.
Even though the lodge was built using sound ecological methods and principles, using solar power to only supply energy to selected equipment such as cameras, iPads and phones, your ‘going back to nature adventure’ will however not be of the Spartan-type. This is the place for the person who is after a ‘Digital Detox’, wanting to disconnect completely – from Wi-Fi and mobile phones – yet in style without compromising on the creature comforts! Marataba Trails Lodge counts five luxurious and spacious Eco-Suites with king sized or twin beds, each with a private viewing deck, a fireplace and en-suite bathroom with rain dance shower, freestanding vanity, a safe and a mini viewing deck.
A typical day at Marataba Trails Lodge starts with coffee and pre-trail snacks in the main lodge. The 4-hours early trail is the longer of the two trails of the day, but please rest assured that different trail options – in terms of difficulty and fitness required – are discussed and agreed upon before setting off the next day. A mid-walk refreshment break is systematically offered at one of the stunning view points.
On return to the lodge a sumptuous, healthy breakfast is served before active guests get the chance to relax, read, snooze, sketch, paint or just ‘be’. A light lunch is then served at the lodge before a recommended and well-deserved afternoon nap!
The shorter afternoon walking trail then again starts after a snack, with these walks including water holes with hippos, vantage points and short gorge walks. On return to camp, a special sundowner is offered prior to heading to an ‘interactive experience’ in the boma where guests learn about the intricacies of bush style cooking. In Winter however trails will leave from the camp later in the morning and earlier in the afternoon to make the most of the sun, while one day will consist of a lie in and a later breakfast, followed by one long walk and a picnic, only returning to camp mid afternoon.
Marataba Trails Lodge truly is a year-round destination and the only malaria-free ‘Big 5’ walking trail in South Africa. The fire in the boma is where the evenings are spent exchanging stories and stargazing.
The guides at Marataba Trails Lodge are all senior trails guides with many years of experience in leading guided walks in ‘Big 5’ territories. Even though fully qualified to lead these walks, guides have been carefully selected based on their personalities and their ability to interact with guests in order to ensure the best possible and memorable experience, while being in safe hands.
For intrepid travellers wanting to get ‘up close and personal’ with nature in Marakele Park, Marataba Trails Lodge offers a truly unique experience in a remote and authentic wilderness of your own.
