Discover the iconic Morukuru Family De Hoop within one of South Africa’s stunning nature reserves
Ocean House is the newest member of the ‘Morukuru Family’ that allows discerning travellers to experience one of Africa’s most beautiful coastal reserves, while residing in a truly stunning yet private oceanfront home that is large enough to accommodate a group of friends or a family with children.
The 36,000-ha De Hoop Nature Reserve offers the perfect location for your South African escape, with its 51km of pristine white beaches and dunes lapped by the warm Indian Ocean, as well as limestone cliffs, rock pools, wetlands and coastal fynbos. The reserve is home to almost 90 mammal species such as the mountain zebra, eland, bontebok, baboon and even an occasional leopard, while bird lovers are guaranteed to be dazzled by 260 species of birds, yet what makes Ocean House truly unique is the bird’s eye view it offers of the continent’s greatest whale nursery. Visitors can witness Southern Right whales migrate to the marine protected shallow coastal basins off the Overberg Coast for the calving and nursing season from mid-July to November, while other whales, dolphins and seals can also be frequently spotted.
Even though Ocean House was built to have a minimal environmental and visual impact; while being off the grid this spectacular family villa is a stunning example of architectural brilliance combining sophistication and seamless, harmonious integration within the surrounding fynbos dunes. The property can accommodate a maximum of eight adults and four children. The four stylish – and well appointed – double bedrooms all have their own en-suite bathrooms and beautiful glass fronts overlooking the Indian Ocean. The children’s room features four bunk beds and the only TV in the house! In the same spirit of promoting ‘togetherness’ and creating lasting memories, Wi-Fi connectivity is not available in the gorgeous dining room – overlooking the ocean and the fabulous pool area – while several hotspots are available throughout the property. On the upper floor, the cosy lounge and bar area is totally encased in glass offering amazing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape while also leading to a sundeck boasting stunning ocean views, comfortable loungers and sofas. As a ‘remote’ addition to Ocean House’s spectacular outdoor areas, a ‘strategically’ located Dutchtub Original hot tub is hinting to the owners’ Dutch roots. The Morukuru Family concept originated from Ed and Anka Zeeman’s love for South Africa and the malaria-free Madikwe Reserve, where they decided to build a home mimicking the comforts of their European homes. The private and secluded Owner’s House – built under a Morukuru tree – soon became too small to accommodate friends and family who came over to visit and explore all the Madikwe Reserve has to offer. Before long, the River House was built and from there successful businessman Ed Zeeman and his wife Anka developed the Morukuru Family concept which now brings the best of South Africa to travellers from across the globe.
Guests staying at Ocean House can enjoy the unique ‘whatever you want, whenever you want’ Morukuru Freedom Concept which guarantees total freedom without schedules or time tables. The way you wish to fulfil your holiday is completely up to you and your beloved ones. Morukuru Family looks after the rest with its own close-knit staff, meaning that you are attended to by a personal chef and butler, two housekeepers, host, safari guide and a wildlife tracker. All activities – such as guided walks, hikes and mountain bike tours, guided 4×4 fynbos nature drives, sand boarding, whale watching, snorkelling and numerous beach games -can thus be tailored to your own requirements. Children are encouraged to participate and are allowed to join the nature drives, reflecting the family oriented ethos of this private villa which caters for multi-generational families as well as tight knit groups of friends. Parents who might however want to enjoy a well-deserved break or romantic dinner, can call upon the services of their own ‘African Mary Poppins’ since Ocean House will make sure that children are in the responsible care of an experienced nanny, with plenty of exciting things to do.
Every Morukuru cuisine meal is a special occasion. On moonlit nights, you may find your table outside overlooking the Indian Ocean while your private Chef will liaise with you before each meal in order to prepare to your taste and interest, making sure that your meals will be served how, where and when you want them. Guests obviously also enjoy 100% access to the kitchen – it temporarily is your home after all – but there is no need for you to do any cooking, unless you’re a committed foodie, or would like a personal cooking demonstration. While the house wine selection at Ocean house is truly exquisite, the wine cellar nevertheless takes your gustatory experience to a completely new level by offering some of South Africa’s finest wines, unavailable to purchase anywhere else but here.
