Segera Retreat, a vision brought to life in Kenya’s backyard
About one hundred miles due north of Nairobi, near the centre of the country of Kenya, where the African savannah begins to grow green, you can find the county of Laikipia, and in the centre of this isolated county, stand the luxurious safari resort, Segera Retreat. Founded in 2005 by the entrepreneur and avid conservationist Joachim Zeitz, Segera Retreat has grown from a few huts to a fully operational and outstandingly deluxe boutique safari hotel. He went on to establish the Zeitz Foundation in 2009 and began to working intensively with local Borana, Samburu, and Turkana villages to ensure the life of this natural reserve. When he had established secure fresh water operations and developed one hundred percent solar power sourcing for his visionary estate, he opened the Segera Retreat in 2009, and has enjoyed tremendous success ever since.
Segera and Zeitz follow a policy of 4C’s, which stand for “Community, Commerce, Culture and Conservation,” and as you learn about these four aspects of Segera’s operation, you can also explore the region around the area on a bespoken basis. The county of Laikipia is filled with wildlife, and the professional guides at Segera will be glad to arrange tours of the bush in trusty four-wheel drive vehicles, although some prefer the hiking trails that abound near the estate. Segera Retreat has also brought in a 1976 Rolls Royce Corniche Convertible for guests to enjoy on special occasions, and it makes for quite an entertaining ride.
A Selection of Grand Villas at the Foot of Mount Kenya
The Segera Retreat is easily accessible by air, operating its own landing strip just a short walk away from the villas. Guests at the resort have their choice of six two-story Villas, each filled with unique design and décor, and offering the best in luxury amenities. Each Villa offers panoramic views of the savannahs around the estate and are constructed from local woods, and the child-friendly estate has designed each villa to accommodate families. The Villa Segera, set apart from the rest of the estate for romance, and possessing its own swimming pool, was designed for couples, while the House Segera offers a trio of indoor lounges that open out to a private plunge pool. Guests can also enjoy the Segera Retreat Wellness Center, a spa that offers bespoken services, and features yoga instruction, an excellent fitness centre, and a Kenyan steaming room called a Rasul.
An Art Gallery in the Wild Grasslands
One of the most interesting aspects of your stay at Segera will be your discovery of the Sculpture Garden, on the western side of the estate. Joachim Zeitz has worked long and hard at filling this gallery with art that has moved him to think of the Savannah and the future, and the resulting display is now a satellite installation of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art in Cape Town, South Africa. You may also want to go on a day trip to Mount Kenya, just twenty miles to the southeast, or Lake Baringo, a vibrant fresh water environment filled with aquatic African wildlife. When you are done exploring the savannah for the day, a visit to the Segera Wine Tower will refresh you, and you can relax as the sun sets in the African wilderness, resting in the luxurious comfort of the Villas of Segera Retreat.
