The Uyuni Airstream Experience

The Uyuni Airstream Experience, Sleeping under a sensational blanket of a million stars

At over 3,600 metres above sea level in the Bolivian Altiplano, the Salar de Uyuni – the world’s largest salt flat – is a place unlike anywhere else in the world. Stretching over 11,000 square kilometres, there is nothing but blindingly white, crystallised salt as far as the eye can see.

Crillon Tours operates three-day trips in and around the salt flats, travelling in hardy 4x4s by day, taking in not only the mesmerizing whiteness but also stopping at erupting geysers, eerily-coloured lagoons and low-lying islands where nothing but giant cacti survive.

What sets this trip apart from others is that, rather than sleeping in salt hotels, one tows one’s accommodation – a deluxe Airstream – stopping in the middle of the vast white desert to eat and rest. Cocktails at sunset in this setting are an experience to savour and, come nightfall, the silence is absolute, and the sight of a million stars overhead is hard to forget.
